Most triathletes aren’t natural swimmers. Structured open water training is non-negotiable before race season—it’s what separates the successful from the strugglers. Stop worrying about the swim: Transform your pool confidence into open water speed with specialized coaching, turning your weakest leg into your biggest strength.
Important Note: Before we dive into the details, a quick heads-up: the OWS Prep and Training is not a substitute for Learn to swim instruction. This phase of development is intended for those who already have basic water competency and are not meant to teach anyone how to swim from scratch.
Build Technique and Confidence
The pool provides your foundation for triathlon swim success. Master the fundamentals first, and your open water performance will follow naturally.
- Improve Stroke efficiency and breathing
- Improve form and balance
- Interval sets for endurance
- Improve stroke count and pacing
- Sighting and navigation
- Buoy turn and start drills
- Pick-up speed / Surge for passing
- Get used to swimming in a crowd
- Starts from land and water
- Wetsuit and swimwear considerations
Quality technique beats volume every time – focused coached 60 minute sessions will improve your swimming more effectively than endless laps. Remember, you can’t win the race in the swim, but you can certainly lose it there, making proper preparation essential for triathlon success.
Note: A Win would be hitting your swim goal on top of meeting your bike and run performance expectations.
A Loss would be a poor swim causing a degraded bike and run performance due to poor swim technique and lack of practice.
Upon a proficient stroke technique is achieved and safety protocols you’ll be cleared and invited to attend our Alumni Open Water Swim Clinics for group training. In the late fall and winter these are held indoors.
